Gala Goes Gangbusters:  $225,000 Raised for Vista Hill Programs

Chairperson Mary Alice Brady and her Gala Committee jumped in with both feet and made 10/10/10 A Perfect 10! an unforgettable Vista Hill Gala.  Raising $200,000 was their target, and with the help of 250 guests, they surpassed this goal!

Robert Dean, Vista Hill President & CEO, named Virginia Napierskie and Connie Conard, mother-daughter philanthropists in San Diego, the IMBY (In My Back Yard) Award winners for their long-term commitment to Vista Hill and other local organizations. They received a well-deserved standing ovation.

Honorary Chairs Audrey S. Geisel and Darlene Marcos Shiley were present in spirit.  They, along with Virginia Napierskie, kicked off the Gala underwriting this year and helped the Committee surpass its goal. Having such dedicated donors who lead the way means the world to Vista Hill.

The Gala Buzz started many weeks ago, and the official kick-off Patron Reception was held at Mary Alice and Ron Brady's on September 22nd with fifty guests enjoying their beautiful home.

On 10/10/10, guest speaker Irma Contreras, a ParentCare graduate, spoke of her many years drug-free, and thanked Vista Hill for “being there” for so many struggling women and children in San Diego County.

Guitarist Kim Olson wrote and sang songs on the spot during the cocktail hour while guests viewed a special line-up of live and silent auction items.  Many unique touches focusing on “ten,” made the evening especially fun.  Auctioneer Mark Drilling and Friends of Vista Hill Event Coordinator Rachel Peniche encouraged attendees to open their wallets to Fund a Need.

Everyone enjoyed delicious cuisine by Crown Point Catering and entertainment by the award-winning Chula Vista High School Glee Show Choir “Vocal Synergy” – 10 girls and 10 boys with beautiful voices and lots of energy.

Music by the Mighty Untouchables (known that night as the Mighty UnTENables) completed the evening with dancing and 10 desserts at the Liberty Station Conference Center.  The event ended at 10:10 p.m., a very appropriate hour.

20th Annual Gala Gets into Gear!  Best Attendance Ever!
Haute Rods & Harleys was a roaring success with many theme-inspired touches by a creative committee co-chaired by Liz Copley and Patti Holmes.  Three hundred forty bikers and cocktail-attired guests had their photos taken on a Hog while mingling and enjoying delicious hors d'oeuvres. When the doors of the Legends Ballroom at the Hard Rock Hotel opened, the room was aglow in bright blue, red and grey.  It was the perfect setting.  Comfort food included meatloaf and mashed potatoes with red velvet and chocolate cake and goodies from the “take-away” candy bar for dessert. Silent and live auction items were swept up quickly. Clark Anthony donated his services as auctioneer for the evening and was assisted by our own Rachel Peniche from the Friends of Vista Hill staff.

Energetic guests danced the night away to the music of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Current Friends of Vista Hill Board Chair Vicki Hamilton, owner of Crown Point Catering, received the IMBY (In My Back Yard) Award for her many years of service and dedication to Vista Hill and other worthwhile causes in the local community. The amount raised was $175,000 and counting – all to benefit a variety of Vista Hill programs.  Parent speaker Marcia Jones focused the audience's attention on scholarships for after-school Special Care Services at Stein Education Center.

Dedicated Honorary Chairs were mother-daughter duo Jan Mullin and  Rachel Mullin Ficara.  Our generous underwriters were Audrey S. Geisel – Dr. Seuss Fund; Darlene and Donald Shiley; the Holmes Family; The Jeffrey & Sheila Lipinsky Family Foundation; Thomas J. and Theodora Lynch Fleming Foundation; Virginia Napierskie; the John M. & Sally B. Thornton Foundation; Vista Hill Board of Directors; Ingrid B. Hibben; US Trust – Lisa Behun; Chandler Asset Management; San Diego County Credit Union; and Synergy Electric.

Pretty in Pink! 18th Annual Vista Hill Fashion Show celebrated “Barbie: 50 & Fabulous.” There were plenty of Barbies on hand. Barbie was the center of attention in the middle of the luncheon tables, flanking either side of the stage and a huge display of collectible and vintage Barbies adorned the foyer. Over 450 ladies shopped ‘til they dropped at the fabulous boutiques and silent auction tables. Once inside the ballroom, guests were delighted by the luscious lunch and cute cupcakes – frosted in pink of course!

Barbie Spinazzola, event chair, and Barbara Brown who served as Honorary Chair walked the runway arm and arm with Vista Hill's very own CEO, Robert Dean.

Carol LeBeau once again graced Vista Hill by being the mistress of ceremonies and got a little surprise from Vista Hill Board Member, Maggie Watkins (aka vintage Barbie).

Former Fashion Show Chairs and Honorary Chairs walked the runway before the fantastic Fashion Show by Gretchen Productions began.

Women's Council on Mental Health Luncheon Update:

Dr. Thomas Perls was the featured speaker at Vista Hill's Women's Council on Mental Health luncheon on Tuesday, February 26;  and he was also the honored guest the evening before at the Patron Reception at the home of Gayle and Phil Tauber.

Dr. Perls provided interesting information from his long-term genetic and social study of centenarians and gave the luncheon crowd of nearly 300 a great deal to think about.  As one of a handful of the world's experts studying these older patients, Dr. Perls' book “Living to 100:  Lessons in Living to Your Maximum Potential at Any Age” makes sense and provides good direction and ideas for all of us.

Dr. Perls has an excellent memory, and he recalleda variety of stories about our wonderful, older citizens:  humorous, interesting, enlightening.

Dr. Perls also delighted the WCMH membership by joining the group at the Sapphire level.  Thank you, Dr. Perls!   And thanks, too, to the many supporters of the Women's Council on Mental Health and of Vista Hill.  We also send kudos to Chair Marjie Atwood, Ph.D.; Charlotte Neilsen, Honorary Chair, and the WCMH event committee. You are all very much appreciated!

GALA UPDATE:

Vista Hill's 50th Anniversary Gala: A Huge Success!

Thanks to everyone involved, The Big 5-0! annual gala brought in the biggest profit Vista Hill has ever made: $205,000! The team effort paid off and proceeds will help critical Vista Hill programs serving children, teens, and adults who struggle with mental illness, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities.

Following hors d'oeuvres and socializing in the foyer of the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, music by Diva Soul welcomed guests into the beautiful ballroom (gorgeous centerpieces, white dance floor, perfectly-appointed table settings) for an exciting evening of dinner, dancing, live auction, and more.

The October 13 event featured special recognition for Audrey S. Geisel and Donald and Darlene Shiley who were given the IMBY (In My Back Yard), Vista Hill's annual award for individuals who make a significant and very positive difference right here in San Diego County. Ms. Geisel accepted for herself and for the Shileys who were unable to attend. She gave a from-the-heart acceptance speech at the microphone letting the audience know the importance of Vista Hill programs.

Vista Hill President and CEO Robert Dean introduced a brief video tracing the history of Vista Hill. The video set the stage for Jeremy, a former Vista Hill client who had spoken at the 40th Anniversary Gala. At that time, he was a teenager, finally clean and sober, and on his way to a productive life. Now, at age 27, 10 years later, Jeremy thrilled the audience with his continuing story, a great example of the long-term success of such programs as SAFIR (Supporting Adolescents & Families in Recovery).

Russ T. Nailz provided auction excitement, part of which was raising $50,000 in five minutes in honor of Vista Hill's 50 years; the dinner included Macadamia coconut crusted filet and miso Chilean seabass along with individual birthday cakes; dancing went on into the evening.

Past IMBY winners Elaine Lipinsky and Ingrid Hibbin attended along with 300 dedicated friends of Vista Hill. The Honorary Chairs were Valerie and Harry Cooper and Tamara Alter. The Gala Committee, chaired by Kristy Gregg, included Tamara Alter, Dee Ammon, Renee Bannasch, Lynn Cihak, Connie Conard, Debbie Giaquinta, Nicole Hamilton, Vicki Hamilton, Linda Jones, Debra McGinty-Poteet, Marie Miehls, Ann Mound, Rachel Mullin, Carol Power, Susan Roth, Angela Rowe, Susan Straub, Beckie Van Houten, and Maggie Watkins.

Underwriters were Audrey S. Geisel/Dr. Seuss Fund/San Diego Foundation; Virginia Napierskie; CIGNA; KPBS; San Diego National Bank; Vista Hill Board of Directors; Thomas J. & Theodora Lynch Fleming Foundation; Vicki Hamilton/Crown Point Catering; Lynn & Fred Muto; City National Bank; San Diego County Credit Union; Elaine Lipinsky; Linda Marteeny; Judy & Alan Robbins; Hermeen Scharaga; Fred Applegate & Laura Bradley; Donald & Karen Cohn.
